What is BALI?

Learn about us, our community of attorneys and our team.

BALI Bay Area Legal Incubator is a community of solo attorneys dedicated to providing affordable legal services and promoting social justice.

BALI is not a law firm.  We are social-mission community (with a physical hub and online network) for individual,  attorneys licensed to practice in California and committed to serving people of modest economic means. Each individual attorney operates her or his own, distinct and independent practice. No legal representation relationship exists in any way between BALI and any of the clients or prospective clients of the attorneys within our community and/or any user of this website and BALI or any of its affiliates.

The program includes a introductory, one-year incubator program to help newer solos and recent law school graduates accelerate the launch of solo practices serving low- and middle-income clients in an array of practice  areas. We also provide opportunity for more experienced solo attorneys to join and benefit as graduate fellows and attorneys in residence. Local communities benefit from legal assistance; attorneys benefit from a shared community, office space and resources, training in emerging best practices and technology, as well as coaching in law, practice management, marketing and substantive law.

BALI is a project of the Alameda County Bar Association and Volunteer Legal Services Corporation, in collaboration with four local law schools (Berkeley Law, Golden Gate University School of Law, University of California Hastings School of Law, and University of San Francisco), and the Alameda County Law Library. BALI launched in January 2016 with cohorts comprised of alumni from the collaborative partner schools. Beginning in 2018, BALI attorneys also include “Free Agents,” or attorneys not sponsored by one of the collaborative partner schools, as well as Graduate Fellows and Attorneys in Residence.
